Hello dear readers!

Winter has come, but so that the trees in the garden do not suffer from the invasion of pests, it is necessary to fight them and carry out preventive measures all year round.

Many people are interested in the question of where insect pests overwinter and how to deal with them.

In winter, harmful insects do not disappear, but winter under the thickness of snow; as a result, in the spring you can see the consequences of their activity.

In order not to lose the crop, you need to take care of the safety of plants and soil and protecting them from parasites.

Where pest insects winter

As a rule, insect pests can winter in the following locations:

  • the soil;
  • crowns of trees and bushes;
  • country houses and other buildings;

Most insects winter in the soil, including the larvae of the cherry mucous sawfly, the larvae of the currant fruit sawfly, the pupa of the gooseberry moth, the larva of the raspberry beetle, as well as the strawberry-raspberry weevil and the strawberry mite.

If you think that snow retainers for metal tiles will help you in the fight against them, then you are deeply mistaken.

Strawberry-raspberry weevil and strawberry mite hibernate in the ground under fallen leaves and at the base of leaf petioles, and in the upper layer of soil.

Important!
Near the trunk, or in between the trunk and the ground, the beetles of the apple beetle hiding for the winter.

In the soil at a depth of up to 25 cm, the Colorado potato beetle and bear are usually winter.

Also, under the fallen leaves, flea beetles hiding radishes, turnips, radishes, and caterpillars of the pea moth are hidden.

Ways to control insects

To prevent the appearance of parasites in the soil, you must perform the following steps:

  • carefully clean last year's fallen leaves and carefully examine the tree bark;
  • treat the bark of trees with copper sulfate and whiten;
  • periodically loosen the soil;
  • if parasites are found on the surface of the cortex or branches of eggs, they must be carefully removed and the surface disinfected;

To protect the soil around the trees from parasites, you should cover the trunk circles with stripes of roofing material 30 cm wide, and after flowering the garden, the roofing material can be removed.

An effective way to protect trees from parasites is also vaccination, and it’s also worth taking the helpers of birds and feeding them so that the birds exterminate insects on the site.

Advice!
If parasite larvae appear in the crown of the trees, carefully remove the damaged branches and leaves with a pruner so that the disease does not spread throughout the tree.

In houses and sheds, larvae of the apple moth and cabbage pupa can hide, so buildings should be whitened regularly for prevention.

Before closing the cottage for the winter, do not forget to inspect the bark and crowns of trees and shrubs for insects, whitewash the bark and all buildings, and also leave bird feeders.
